Sweet Talk: Pie Eyed

It’s officially pie time, but unless you’ve perfected your crust or have a signature filling that would make Paul Hollywood drool, there’s no reason to labor over a slab of dough. The Main Line’s go-to for bakery celebrates the solstice time with apple pecan caramel, pear cranberry pecan and Boston crème pies.

This Reading Terminal staple may be best known for its whimsical donut flavors, but don’t sleep on the luxuriant apple, pecan and shoofly pies.

David’s Southern Fried Pies
A relative newcomer to the local food scene, this Northeast-based bakery specializes in crispy hand pies but also proffers wonderful classics with Philly names like Boyz 2 Men (pecan) and Ron Hextal (sweet potato/banana).

Flying Monkey Bakery
Dessert doesn’t get more fun than at this stand in Reading Terminal Market where the most famous dish is Pummple Cake (actually apple and pumpkin pies baked into a layer cake). Buy by the slice or order a whole one with 72 hours notice.

Mt. Airy’s dessert mecca has Thanksgiving and Christmas covered with pumpkin, sweet potato, pecan, apple crumble and pear ginger pies.
